Lily bulb is the dried fleshy scale leaf of Lilium lancifolium Thunb., Lilium brownii F. E. Brown var. viridulum Baker or Lilium pumilum DC. The drug is collected in autumn, and washed clean. The scale leaves are stripped off, treated with boiling water for a moment, and dried.
Description Elongated elliptical, 2-5 cm long, 1-2 cm wide, 3-4 mm thick at middle. Externally whitish, pale brownish-yellow or purplish, with several longitudinal and paralled white vascular bundles. Apex somewhat acute, base relatively broad, margins thin, undulate, slightly curved inwards. Texture hard and fragile, fracture relatively even, horny. Odourless; taste, slightly bitter.
Identification To 3 g of the coarse powder add 50 ml of 90% acidic ethanol (adjust with dilute sulfuric acid to pH 2-3), heat under reflux on a water bath for 1 hour, filter. Evaporate the filtrate near dryness, add 30 ml of water, heat to dissolve, allow to cool, add dropwise sodium hydroxide TS to adjust to pH 9-10. Extract by shaking with four 15-ml quantities of chloroform, combine the chloroform extracts, add a quantity of anhydrous sodium sulfate, stir and filter. Evaporate the filtrate to dryness. Dissolve the residue with 0.5 ml of chloroform as the test solution. Produce a reference drug solution of 1 g of Bulbus Lilii reference drug in the same manner. Carry out the method for thin layer chromatography (Appendix VI B), using silica gel GF254 as the coating substance and chloroform-methanol-ethyl acetate (22:5:6) as the mobile phase. Apply separately to the plate 15 ml of the test solution, 10 ml of the reference drug solution. After developing in a chamber pre-equilibrated with ammonia vapor and removal of the plate, dry it in air. Examine under ultraviolet light (254nm). The spots in the chromatogram obtained with the test solution correspond in position and colour to the spots in the chromatogram obtained with the reference drug solution.
Extractives Carry out the cold extraction method as described under the determination for water soluble extractive (Appendix X A), not less than 18.0%.
Processing Bulbus Lilii Eliminate foreign matter.
Bulbus Lilii (honeyed) Stir-bake the clean Bulbus Lilii as described under the method for stir-baking with honey (Appendix II D) to no longer sticky, using 5 kg of refined honey per 100 kg of Bulbus Lilii.
