Argy Wormwood Leaf
Argy Wormwood Leaf is the dried leaf of Artemisia argyi Levl. et Vant. (Fam. Compositae). The drug is collected in summer before flowering, removed from foreign matter, and dried in the sun.
Description: Mostly crumpled and broken, short petioled. When whole, ovate-elliptical, pinnatipartite, segments elliptical-lanceolate, margin irregularly dentate; upper surface greyish-green or dark yellowish-green, sparsely pubescent and glandular-punctate, lower surface densely greyish-white tomentose. Texture soft. Odour, delicately aromatic; taste, bitter.
Identification Powder: Greenish-brown. Non-glandular hairs occurring in two types: one type T-shaped, with a elongated and bent apical cell, unequally 2-armed and a 2-4 celled stalk; the other type of uniseriate, 3-5 celled, with a very long and twisted apical cell, frequently broken. Glandular hairs paramecium-like in surface view, consisting of 4 or 6 oppositely-overlapped cells, devoid of stalk. Clusters of calcium oxalate 3-7 mm in diameter, occurring in mesophyll cells.
Processing: Folium Artemisiae Argyi Eliminate foreign matter and petioles, and sift.
Folium Artemisiae Argyi (carbonized and processed with vinegar): Stir-bake clean Folium Artemisiae Argyi as described under the method of carbonizing by stir-baking (Appendix II D) until the surface is charred, then spray with vinegar and stir-bake to dryness.
To each 100 kg of Folium Artemisiae Argyi add 15 kg of vinegar.
Action: To dispel cold, relieve pain, and arrest bleeding.
Folium Artemisiae Argyi(carbonized and processed with vinegar): To arrest excessive menstrual discharge.
Indications: Pain in the lower abdomen with cold sensation; menstrual disorders of cold type; infertility; spitting of blood, epistaxis, uterine bleeding in pregnancy, excessive menstrual flow; external use for itching.
Folium Artemisiae(carbonized and processed with vinegar): Excessive menstrual flow of deficiency-cold type.
Usage and dosage: 3-9 g; for external use, appropriate quantity for moxibustion or fuming and washing.
Storage: Preserve in a cool and dry place.
